| Internet:
An average worker spends 3,4 ~ 5,9 hours/week (2 ~15% on
the Internet) on non-company related issues (e.g. porn). This results
in risk of unwanted contents on company’s computers and unnecessary
bandwidth usage. Imagine the consequences if child pornography is
found on your corporate servers or if company data was displayed
publicly through a hacker backdoor. Moreover most shopping and surfing
is done during business hours. Recent study shows that in July 2004,
28 million porn pages are being created, ie. 10 every second. And
most malware is placed on porn pages, sites with MP3s etc. Preventing
access to these sites will increase security.
Web filtering allows the administrator to set rules, as part
of IT-policy, that governs access to internet resources using
internet filtering software. The software blocks/advises against
specific sites on the Internet. Some people view filtering softwares
as censorship, however, there is a need to prevent misuse of corporate
internet and bandwidth, and also to protect the individual employee
from unintentional misuse.
Imagine this scenario:
You are away on a business trip. Can you leave the office in
peace, knowing that no external forces (threats from viruses,
worms, Trojan Horses etc.) will be allowed to enter your network?
As a business owner/CEO/school principal, are you aware of the
consequences if pornography is found on your server or if company/school
data is displayed publicly through a hacker backdoor? Accessing
non-company related websites will also result in unnecessary bandwidth
usage.
